Secondhand Swagger w/ Major and the Monbacks

TDawg presents a special Thursday night of vintage southern soul + funk with Atlanta's Secondhand Swagger and Norfolk's Major and the Monbacks!

$10 Adv – $12 Door
Doors @ 8 PM

Secondhand Swagger is more than a name; it's a lifestyle. We're an Atlanta-based band with a passion for vintage sounds and style, disciples of soul music from the 1960s and 70's. Our mission is to keep this music alive and people dancing, taking it back to a time when lyrics and melodies came from the heart with a wink and a laugh.

Secondhand Swagger was just a dream when Abby Wren (vocals) and Scott Bryan (drums and vocals) got together in 2008, spending every Sunday for a year in a song-writing sojourn. Secondhand grew member by member and the family now includes Dane Skelton (sax), Jason Beard (guitar), Larry Thomas (bass) and Tiffany White (keys/vocals).

We believe we're soulmates brought together to keep this vintage sound alive.

Major and the Monbacks are the newest torch bearers of the old “Norfolk Sound”, following a long line of musicians with a sound that bridges the gap between the R&B of Gary U.S. Bonds, the rockabilly of Gene Vincent, and the modern garage pop of Dr. Dog to create an exciting brew of rock n’ soul. With 4 vocalists, a hypeman, and a lively horn section, the Monbacks have revived the party infused energy of southern soul, blending this old school style with danceable pop melodies and ska and soul horn riffs, stirring dreamlike visions of Otis Redding or Chuck Berry playing a beer soaked fraternity party.

Since early 2008, The Monbacks have steadily been strengthening their lineup to now include 9 members, including the self proclaimed “Eastern Seaboard’s Horniest Horn Section.” With a home base in Norfolk, Virginia, the Monbacks represent a number of universities all over Virginia and North Carolina, routinely hitting the road throughout the semester to play gigs along Virginia’s college circuit.

What started as a small bedroom jam band with a big heart, has expanded into one of the most well versed party bands in southern Virginia known for high energy live shows full of dancing and jamming. The Monbacks are familiar with all types of events, from house parties to country club socials, and venues, from bars and clubs to Norfolk, VA’s The NorVa. The Monbacks have a full set of original music, some of which are featured on the band’s first studio effort, Monback House Party EP released in the winter of 2012, along with a deep catalogue of soul, funk, and dance covers that blend seamlessly to create an enlivened dance floor or party experience.
