International Jazz Day 2019: Atlanta Jam

Doors @ 7 PM

Atlanta is celebrating International Jazz Day, along with the world, on April 30, 2019 with the 2nd Annual Jam Session at Red Light Cafe. Cultural Ambassador and International Songbird Myrna Clayton will host the event and invites all of the Atlanta area Jazz music lovers to come out to enjoy together all forms of Jazz: Standards, Bebop, Fusion, Contemporary, etc. You never know what Jazz performers will join the jam but you can be sure it will be a night to remember!

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. The Institute is the lead nonprofit organization charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration.

International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity; eradicating discrimination; promoting freedom of expression; fostering gender equality; and reinforcing the role of youth in enacting social change.

This album’s blend of timeless folk themes and rich, lively production lends itself to a masterful recording …a rich bygone take on the stunning sound of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, that lifts with silvery harmonies and a rustic cinematic scope.”

Join us for the Atlanta Songwriters Club Meet Up at Red Light Café every second Monday of the month! $5 at the door, starts at 8pm, and you can sign up to play a song if you'd like when you get here.

The Atlanta Songwriters Club is a bit like an open mic with a few key differences. This group exists for songwriter's who would like to interact with other songwriters. It is similar to an open mic, but with the added benefit of discussion. You can come and play a song or just watch and listen. If you'd like to play, you will tell us all if you are interested in receiving feedback on the song or not. If you are interested then after you play we will all discuss what we like about the song, and any suggestions we might have as a group. If you'd rather not have any feedback on the song then you will simply play the song for us. There's no cash prize, competition, or politics. Just songwriting discussions and hopefully new friendships.

If you're a songwriter looking to connect with other songwriters and get some dialogue happening, this group is for you! A club like this allows us to get to know other local songwriters, and learn from one another.

Andy Gold: Addicted to Comedy

MON • MAY 20 • 8 PM
$10 Adv – $15 Door
Doors @ 7 PM

Andy Gold: Addicted to Comedy is a new stand-up comedy show about the grizzly life of addiction, the road to recovery and what it’s like navigating though life as a recovering addict.

Andy has appeared in festivals and competitions all over the country, including the Boston Comedy Festival, San Diego Comedy Festival, Laugh Your Asheville Off and Comcast’s Trial by Laughter Comedy Festival. Andy’s comedy has also been featured on Hulu and he can be heard regularly on Kevin Hart’s Laugh out Loud network on Sirius XM and Audible’s Punchlines. Andy also recorded a full length special for Dry Bar Comedy called Dreamcatcher in which he received an exciting amount of hateful comments from lonely Facebook moms in homemade pants.

Andy draws humor from all parts of his life, especially the nearly 10 years he spent in active heroin addiction which has made Andy is a favorite at treatment centers and recovery events across the country. Andy began his comedy career just six months after a (temporally) fatal overdose prompted Andy's family to intervene and convince him to go to treatment. A prolific writer, Andy’s material runs the gamut from sharing colorful jokes about life, dating, jail, rehab, family and recovery and it’s all tied together by one thing and one thing only: really big laughs.
