Emily Backus and Meg Brooks became Total Babe thanks to some determined and encouraging mutual friends, some light internet stalking, a musical blind date, and a shared affection for songs that make your soul say “oof”—the punch-in-the-gut, roar-in-the-throat, tug-on-the-heartstrings, tell-yourself-the-truth, joyful-noise songs. Schoolteachers by day, Emily and Meg have the earliest bedtimes of any band you know. They have the best moms ever. They are thrilled to release their first EP, TB!
Catherine the Great is the solo project of Catherine Backus, one-half of twinsome duo the Skipperdees. A native East-Tennessean and graduate of the University of Georgia (go dawgs, go b-52’s), Catherine now resides in Virginia, where she splits her musical time between playing bluegrass with old dudes and singing songs she wrote. Her music has drawn comparisons to Kathleen Edwards, Lori McKenna, and Gillian Welch (who also won the Merlefest CASC, in 1992).
Cntry: Country Music in a Riot Grrrl Ethos (mebbe?).
