Sweet Knievel returns to Red Light Café with their eclectic, jammed-out sound in tow. Jake & the Beanstalk (also joining the RLC Two Timers Club) open the show.
Sweet Knievel began as a side-project band put together by keyboardist Jerry Hendelberg (Dubconscious). Calling on his old friend Jonathan Brill (Efren) to play guitar, the two (along with various rhythm sections) developed a set made up of jammed-out, instrumental, 'muzak'-type covers of songs, ranging from artists such as My Morning Jacket to RJD2. Gradually, there was a shift towards predominantly original music, both instrumental and lyrical. Just as comfortable throwing down classic rock chords as with laying tight funk grooves, Sweet Knievel also reaches out and borrows from Jazz, Southern Rock, Bluegrass, Latin, and Reggae. Not forgetting their original intent when forming, the band continues to deliver their own interesting versions of covers, often times with Brill replacing a song's vocal line with a chilling slide guitar melody, such as on their take of Prince's 'The Beautiful Ones' or Death Cab For Cutie's 'I Will Follow You'.
Arising from the fertile grounds of the Atlanta music scene when three Athens/Atlanta musicians joined forces with a transplant from Knoxville, Jake & the Beanstalk has quietly crafted their sound, blending an eclectic mix of blues and rock, with an itch for improvisation. Anchored by the tight rhythm section of Jeremy Friedman and Cary Dunning on drums and bass, Jordan Lee and Jake Moore utilize a dual guitar attack to shape and color a unique hybrid of bluesy rock and psychedelic funk.
The band pushes the envelope by digging deeper into the vault for material rather than playing the same overplayed covers bar bands have worn out for decades, treating listeners to a refreshing and entertaining live music experience. With a healthy arsenal of original music and cover tunes culled from the artists they admire, Jake & the Beanstalk always bring their passion for playing and the party to their listeners.
