Royal Johnson, nominated by the readers of the 11th Hour as Macon’s Best Rock Band for 2018, is a southern-fried rock band from middle Georgia with thick elements of funk, blues and country.
RJ has released two full albums since its inception in 2014. The first was a home studio recording called Belly Full that sold several hundred copies and garnered high praise. The latest album, Howlin’, was released in October 2017. The release was recorded at Muscadine Studios, home of legendary producer and musician Paul Hornsby, most known for his work with the Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels and Wet Willie, and for his time playing in Hourglass with Duane and Gregg Allman. Royal Johnson will release a new four-song EP titled Jars in late January 2019.
In five years the band has booked hundreds of dates all over the southeast independently. In 2019 they will be making their second trip to play in Mexico, as well as expanding their touring on a national scale. They’ve shared stages along the way with artists like The Doobie Brothers, Willie Nelson, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’, Brent Cobb, Audley Freed, Cowboy, Susto, Joan Osborne, Turnpike Troubadours, Band of Heathens, Stillwater, Jimmy Hall, Cody and Luther Dickinson, Stillwater, Jack Pearson, Randall Bramblett, Greensky Bluegrass, Bishop Gunn, Cordovas, Marcus King, ZOSO, Chris Knight, The Autumn Defense, Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics, The Freight Train Band, Steve Poltz, Daniel Donato, Hannah Wicklund, Zane Carney, Great Peacock, Thomas Wynn and the Believers, Honey Island Swamp Band, Sam Morrow, OTIS, AJ Ghent, Samantha Fish, Robert Lee Coleman, The Pine Box Dwellers, Come Back Alice and many more.
