Get your BRASS on at Red Light Cafe on Friday, September 13th, at 8 pm!
This will be the world premiere of Sax Sabbath, who take a highly unique approach to the music of early Black Sabbath, along with two of Atlanta’s best brass bands – Funk Cake and Mercury Orkestar – each of whom stretch the limits of what a brass band can be!
Sax Sabbath is a one-of-a-kind experiment paying tribute to the fathers of heavy metal. Without guitar. Without vocals. Instead, Kath Fidler takes on many of the infamous Ozzy lines with her mighty saxophones, while Allen Welty-Green channels Tony Iommi's monstrous riffs with his stack of keyboards. Holding it all down, we have the ever-so-versatile Rob Dwyer covering Geezer's thundering bass lines, and the inimitable Richie Torrance capturing all the frenetic subtlety of Bill Ward's drum parts.
Funk Cake combines the traditional elements of a rock band with the distinctive sound of brass instruments. This fusion creates a lively and exuberant experience, often described as fun, dynamic, and spectacular. Alex Rodiek, bandleader, trumpeter, arranger, and composer officially formed Funk Cake in November of 2016. Comprised of top call freelancers, Funk Cake brings the sizzle to their live shows by combining genre-bending arrangements with virtuosic soloing.
Mercury Orkestar fuses pop rhythm, Balkan melody, and jazz improvisation in lively performances that are a shot of pure excitement. Their spitfire trumpets, wailing clarinets and booming tubas will get any party started. The band is led by Erik Kofoed and includes some of the best classical, jazz, and pop musicians in the Atlanta region. Their repertoire stretches from traditional folk songs and groove heavy originals to kitschy rock covers.
